The famous portrait was written in the French resort of Vichy, where Korovin and Chaliapin, being treated, pondered the joint production of Khovanshchina m. P. Mussorgsky, carried out at the end of the same year on the stage of the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. One of the most inspired creatures of Korovin-impressionist, the portrait of Chaliapin in 1911 belongs to the best examples of his work. (IN. TO.).

Korovin and Chaliapin in life were friends. In art – associates. The portrait was written in the French resort of Vichy, where both of them were treated and pondered the joint production of the opera „Khovanshchina “m. P. Mussorgsky, carried out at the end of 1911 on the stage of the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. Knowing the advantages and disadvantages of a friend, the artist revealed the main thing in his character, what entailed to the actor of contemporaries – nobility, converting natural giftedness in all appearance, openness to the world and the breadth of the soul.

The great Russian singer (BAS) Fedor Ivanovich Chaliapin (1873–1938) sang on the stages of the Moscow Russian private opera (1896–1899), as well as the Great and Mariinsky Theaters in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Chaliapin was popular as a chamber singer, performer of Russian folk songs and romances. Since 1922 he lived abroad.
