Together with Serov, Alexander Benois works a lot on the topics of Russian history of the 18th century, but, having returned to France in 1905, he again plunges into the atmosphere of the “King of the Sun” era and creates his second “Versailles” suite.
The deserted park of Versailles – the famous residence of the French kings. Gloomy winter day. Naked trees pull dark branches to the gray sky. In the foreground is a small pool. The marble flora rises from the water surface – the Greek goddess of the plant world. The balance of the composition, almost monochrome flavor, special lightness, transparency of painting, create the impression of a certain stop of life, convey the poetic atmosphere of the empty Versailles, where nature has plunged into a thoughtful winter sleep. The mood with which the picture is painted suggests the artist’s nostalgia for the past times, when the fun of court holidays reigned here and the king, accompanied by ladies in fashionable toilets, walked along the alleys of the park.
Versailles, showing the exquisite tastes of its inhabitants, ideas about the beauty of the gallant age Louis XIV woke a creative imagination from the painter.
