In 1910-1911, Goncharova wrote a number of paintings on winter plots in which she is attracted by the task „Black and white “decorativeness. A few years earlier, she illustrated the collection of poems by Tikhon Churilin „Spring after death “, where in the poem” Hoze ” – „the rhythm of life and death “was designated as „Black on white “. In the picture, the frozen crowns of trees, given by generalized color spots with the help of characteristic fan -shaped decisive strokes, fill almost the entire space of the canvas and are perceived as a darling “prickly” kingdom, “savannah”. His contrasting is the black rhythm of the silhouettes of trunks and small human figures.
