The artist is Malyavin

Colorful outfits of peasant women and merchants, complemented by bright scarves and prayers, are captured on the canvases of Malyavin, Ryabushkin, Kustodiev, Nesterov and other artists.

Scarves, scarves and shawls are an important part of a girlish and women’s costume. The custom of covering the head with a cloth, a canvas on top of a headdress appeared in the Slavs in ancient times. To appear in public with an uncovered head or at least showing a strand of hair was the biggest shame for a married woman. The general Slavic archaic form of the headdress – Ubrus or the head towel, known since the 11th century by frescoes and book miniatures, has long been preserved in a women’s suit. Over time, manufacturing products came to replace the pre -shocked towels. Factory scarves and shawls existed in a peasant environment as a complement to a headdress or independent decoration of both everyday and festive outfit. In the chest of every woman, regardless of class and prosperity, several scarves were always stored, intended for all occasions. These beautiful examples of the Russian textile industry were included as an integral part in the complex of folk clothing of the second half of the XIX – early twentieth century.
